Senior Al-Shabaab member surrenders to Special Police Forces in South West State.
A senior figure from the militant group Al-Shabaab has surrendered to the Special Police Forces of South West State following a planned security operation conducted in recent days in the Deynuunay area.
The individual, identified as Cabdullaahi Cali Maxamed, had reportedly been a long-time member of Al-Shabaab and is accused of involvement in acts of insecurity and violence targeting civilians, according to media outlets affiliated with the South West State administration.
His surrender comes at a time when security forces have intensified operations aimed at pursuing Al-Shabaab fighters and dismantling hideouts used by the group across various parts of the region. Authorities say the increased pressure has led to a growing number of defections from the militant organization.
The operation that led to the surrender was carried out by the 115th Unit of the Special Police Forces and was led by Unit Commander Ayuub Cabdi Ibraahim. Speaking to local media, the commander described the development as a significant blow to Al-Shabaab, noting that defections have become more frequent, with at least one or two senior members reportedly surrendering within a short period.
Commander Ayuub called on other Al-Shabaab leaders and fighters operating in South West State to lay down their arms and take advantage of the administration’s rehabilitation program. He stated that the government has established a structured reintegration process aimed at helping defectors return to civilian life and contribute positively to their communities.
He further confirmed that security operations will continue until full stability and safety are restored in areas previously affected by militant activity. Authorities maintain that sustained pressure on the group is essential to ensuring long-term peace and security across South West State.
