The President of the federal republic of Somalia has said his government will do all it can to secure the release of citizens detained in Indian.
President Sheikh Mohamud has confirmed official communication with Indian PM Narendra Modi on the release of suspected pirates detained in Mumbai by the Indian judicial authorities.
“ The ministry of foreign affairs and the our diplomatic mission in India have been tasked to ensure the legal representation of citizens in court,†he said.
The President dismissed recent media reports saying that over 50 young Somalis were sentenced to death by Indian court for pirate related case.
“Our diplomatic mission in India has confirmed to us that the media reports of sentence to death of citizens are untrue and misleading information.†He said.
“We hope that with official talks we can resolve the issue and secure their release†he added.
Protest against the detention by Indian government was held across various cities in Somalia.
Demonstrators called upon the central government in Mogadishu to interfere in the case and secure the release of its nationals.
