Somalia Approves Cybersecurity Law: What You Need to Know

Somalia’s House of the People has approved a Cybersecurity Law creating a national framework, defining institutional roles and establishing SOM-CIRT to protect digital infrastructure and support the digital economy.

The House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia has today officially approved Somalia’s Cybersecurity Law, which aims to protect digital infrastructure, secure information systems, and strengthen national cybersecurity.

The law establishes a national framework for managing cybersecurity by defining the responsibilities of the Ministry of Communications, the technical role of the National Communications Authority of Somalia, the obligations of critical infrastructure operators, and the system for preventing, reporting, and responding to cybersecurity incidents, and establishing the Somalia Computer Incident Response Team (SOM-CIRT).

Commenting on the approval, the Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, stated that the law’s approval represents an important step toward building a coordinated national cybersecurity system and strengthening preparedness and response to digital security threats.

Somalia’s Parliament Approves the Cybersecurity Law

The State Minister of Communications and Technology, Mr. Ahmed Osman Dirie, expressed his appreciation to Members of Parliament and emphasized that the law is a critical pillar for safeguarding national cybersecurity, protecting citizens’ interests, and aligning Somalia with international standards and best practices in the field.

The Cybersecurity Law is expected to play a vital role in enhancing digital trust, supporting the growth of the digital economy, and strengthening cooperation among government institutions, the private sector, and international partners.
