Turkey condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey has issued an official statement condemning Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity, describing the move as a violation of international law and a threat to stability in the Horn of Africa.

Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli emphasized that Turkey considers the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia inviolable. He stressed that unilateral actions, such as Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, are illegal and contravene the United Nations Charter.

“Protecting Somalia’s political and territorial unity is a fundamental requirement for peace and stability in the region,” Keçeli said, reaffirming Ankara’s consistent policy of supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in Mogadishu.

The statement warned that unilateral recognition could exacerbate instability in an already fragile region. Keçeli highlighted that attempts to bypass Somalia’s legitimate government or legitimize secessionist movements undermine ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and promote development in the Horn of Africa. He also cautioned the international community against accepting such unilateral measures.

Keçeli underlined the long-standing historical ties between Turkey and Somalia and reiterated Ankara’s commitment to supporting the Somali people. He concluded by urging all international actors to respect Somalia’s sovereignty and avoid actions that could escalate tensions in the Horn of Africa.
