Somalia’s Ambassador to India, Dr. Abdullaahi Maxamed Odawaa, visited Somali citizens detained in India and attended the first hearing of their trial, marking a significant step in diplomatic efforts to secure their release.

During his official visit to Mumbai in Maharashtra, Dr. Odawaa met with 44 Somali nationals who had been detained by India’s Coast Guard in the Indian Ocean. The detainees had been awaiting trial for an extended period.

Thanks to the diplomatic interventions led by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador ensured that the detainees were present for the initial court session. Dr. Odawaa expressed optimism about the prospects of the detainees regaining their freedom, while the second hearing has been scheduled to expedite the legal process.

This visit underscores Somalia’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and strengthening diplomatic channels to resolve legal matters affecting its nationals.
