Omar Okwaki Eumod who was detained on Wednesday on recruitment of youth into the militancy was due to appear before court to answer charges on Thursday morning.
He is said to have planned his rescue from the cells by grabbing a rifle from one of the officers and began shooting indiscriminately and then started taking hostages.
Elite security Recce squad who were sent to the ground have shot and killed the suspect after almost nine hours gun battle inside the police station.
Five other police officers including the station boss were confirmed dead by the Kenyan police.
Kenya experienced wave of attacks from Alshabaab since it military went inside Somalia in October 2011 to pursue the armed group which has threatened its main economy tourism along the coast.
