Somalia President Condemns Israel Over Somaliland Move: What You Need to Know
In Summary

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has again condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, calling it a threat to Somalia’s sovereignty and regional stability, and renewing calls for dialogue with Somaliland.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued another strong condemnation of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. This latest televised address on January 8, 2026, builds on his December 27 speech to parliament, framing Israel's actions as a direct threat to Somalia's sovereignty. The rhetoric underscores escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa amid international backlashes.

President Mohamud declared, "Somalia is not a country that can be occupied, divided, or bought. You will neither impose your will on us nor achieve the ambitions you seek," directly addressing Israeli leadership. He accused Israel of pursuing strategic interests like military bases in the region and relocating Palestinians, warning of instability in the Horn of Africa, Red Sea, and Gulf of Aden. Mohamud emphasized that true recognition comes from Somalia's people and government, not external powers like Netanyahu.

Israel announced recognition of Somaliland on December 26, 2025, becoming the first country to do so since its 1991 declaration of independence from Somalia. This followed a visit by Israel's foreign minister to the region, which Somalia called an "unauthorized incursion." Mohamud's first response on December 27 labeled it a "blatant attack" on sovereignty during a joint parliamentary session, highlighting risks of reviving extremism.

Over 20 countries, including Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Nigeria, plus organizations like the African Union and OIC, condemned the move in a joint statement. Türkiye and others reaffirmed Somalia's territorial integrity. Protests erupted across Somalia against the recognition. UAE also supported Somalia amid allegations of its involvement.

Mohamud renewed calls for dialogue with Somaliland, offering power-sharing and decentralization while rejecting foreign interference. He urged northern Somalis to resist plans turning their lands into foreign bases. The speeches aim to foster national unity, with the president warning of economic and political fallout if unresolved
