Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has issued another strong condemnation of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. This latest televised address on January 8, 2026, builds on his December 27 speech to parliament, framing Israel's actions as a direct threat to Somalia's sovereignty. The rhetoric underscores escalating tensions in the Horn of Africa amid international backlashes.
President Mohamud declared, "Somalia is not a country that can be occupied, divided, or bought. You will neither impose your will on us nor achieve the ambitions you seek," directly addressing Israeli leadership. He accused Israel of pursuing strategic interests like military bases in the region and relocating Palestinians, warning of instability in the Horn of Africa, Red Sea, and Gulf of Aden. Mohamud emphasized that true recognition comes from Somalia's people and government, not external powers like Netanyahu.
Israel announced recognition of Somaliland on December 26, 2025, becoming the first country to do so since its 1991 declaration of independence from Somalia. This followed a visit by Israel's foreign minister to the region, which Somalia called an "unauthorized incursion." Mohamud's first response on December 27 labeled it a "blatant attack" on sovereignty during a joint parliamentary session, highlighting risks of reviving extremism.
