TPLF Urges UN and African Union to Pressure Ethiopian Government Over Pretoria Peace Accord
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has called on the United Nations and the African Union to apply diplomatic pressure on Ethiopia’s federal government to halt hostilities and respect the Pretoria peace agreement, as tensions escalate between the parties and concerns grow over the potential resumption of conflict.
The appeal follows accusations by the TPLF that the federal government violated the peace deal by conducting an airstrike against Tigrayan forces on Friday morning. In an open letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the TPLF claimed that the central government is supporting an armed splinter group operating in the neighboring Amhara region.
Earlier this week, authorities in Amhara alleged that Tigrayan forces crossed into their territory, attacking several villages and seizing control by force.
The federal government has not yet responded to the latest allegations, though it has previously accused the TPLF of violating the peace agreement and destabilizing the region.
The renewed tensions underscore the fragile nature of the Pretoria accord, which was signed to end two years of intense fighting in the Tigray region, and highlight the continuing risk of escalation in northern Ethiopia.
