Eastleigh businesses are counting losses following heavy torrential rains that have pounded the area for the better part of Friday.
The unrelenting deluge left key roads including First Avenue submerged in water rendering shoppers and residents stranded.
A spot check by Radio Dalsan revealed hand cart riders making a killing out of the current, transporting shoppers from one flooded section to another with 20 shilling.
The usually busy Yussuf Haji road and second Avenue were among the worst affected areas causing huge traffic snarl-ups that went past mid-night.
Locals who spoke to Radio Dalsan accused the county government of Nairobi of failing to address the sewage system blockages that have significantly contributed to the flooding witnessed in the city whenever it rains.
“The county government of Nairobi led by governor Johnson Sakaja promised to address the sewage menace but upto now nothing has been done.” said Mohamed.
A frustrated trader said he incurred huge losses after floods swept through his merchandise at the Yare Towers Shopping Mall situated at the heart of the commercial hub.
Eastleigh, a Somali neighborhood in Kenya’s capital Nairobi has over the years witnessed recurring flooding issue which makes movement in and out of the Somali business outlet a nightmare.
Despite the high rise building springing up, the neighbourhood continues to grapple with water-logged and muddy streets which have occasionally swayed away potential customers.
