Somali lawmakers have joined their counterparts from around the world at the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Luanda, the capital of Angola.
The delegation from Somalia, comprising representatives from both the Lower and Upper Houses, is led by Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, the country’s second deputy speaker. Under the theme of “parliamentary action for peace, justice, and strong institutions,” this prestigious gathering, which commenced on October 23, will continue until October 27.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union, established in 1889, holds the distinction of being the oldest multilateral organization consisting of 178 parliaments. With the participation of representatives from 110 parliaments anticipated, the Assembly aims to explore ways in which parliaments can enhance trust between the people and governance structures.
One of the key focal points of the discussions will be the pursuit of effective, accountable, and representative public institutions. Lawmakers will deliberate on strategies to equip parliaments with the necessary tools to address the numerous interconnected geopolitical, economic, and environmental challenges confronting the global community.
During the course of the Assembly, nine Executive Council Members will be elected, and several resolutions will be adopted.
Among the resolutions to be considered is one pertaining to Orphanage trafficking and the role of parliaments in mitigating harm. Furthermore, all Standing Committees and other statutory bodies of the IPU are scheduled to convene, enabling comprehensive engagement on critical parliamentary issues.
A highly anticipated moment of the Assembly will be the announcement of the recipient of the 2023 MP of the Year award, known as the Cremer-Passy Prize. This prestigious accolade recognizes exceptional parliamentary leadership and dedication to public service, acknowledging individuals who have made significant contributions to their nations and the global community through their legislative work.
As the Assembly progresses, the Somali delegation will actively participate in the deliberations, advocating for inclusive policies, promoting peace and stability, and reinforcing the vital role of parliaments in advancing the well-being of their respective nations and the world at large.
