I Will Not Resign, Embattled Speaker Jawari Tells Pro-Khaire MPs

Somalia´s Lower House Speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari on Sunday announced that the motion against him will proceed to Parliament but has given MPs ten days to present it.

Speaking to reporters in the Somali capital Mogadishu Jawari said that if the ten-day period lapses, the motion will expire and to overcome the crisis and resume the parliament operations that have been halted, they should speed up the time taken to table the motion.

Jawari said that he will not resign despite pressure from a section of MPs pushing for the motion.

“Those MPs who are saying that I should resign are dreaming. I came through a legal process and I will leave or stay through a legal process” he said.

He requested the withdrawal of the forces deployed at the parliament building and restoration of the previous security forces. Failure to withdraw, Jawari says, will mean there was an ulterior motive to deploy the military police in the first place.

Among the MPs who were pushing for Jawari’s resignation are Adan Mohamednur Madoobe, Dahir Amin Jesow and Mohamed Hussein Afaraale

Somalia has been thrown in a stalemate as the Speaker and PM Hassan Ali Khaire wage a proxy political battle which the international community has said may derail gains made recently in a country still emerging from decades of civil war and an ongoing insurgency.
