One of the largest market in East Africa has been closed as traders downed their tools to protest against high taxes.
Traders at Bakaara Market in the Somalia capital Mogadishu started their protest on Monday bringing to a halt activities in the usually busy business district.
A Radio Dalsan reporter who visited the market this morning says all shops have been closed.
The traders held a meeting early Sunday and are expected to address the media on their next course of action.
Bakaara generates millions of dollars a day to the Somali economy even through the years of turmoil.
The traders had warned on Saturday at a Press Conference that they will stage a protest if the government fails to reduce the taxes.
Government had recently increased tax on imports in a bid to increase the country’s revenue base.
