Somaliland and Puntland forces early Sunday clashed near Tukaraq in the disputed Sool region, Radio Dalsan reports.
A military source confirmed to Radio Dalsan that both sides used light and heavy weaponry in the fighting.
Both Puntland and Somaliland are yet to issue any statement on the incident.
In a communique released on Saturday regional bloc IGAD called for an end to the military confrontation between the two.
“Council notes the successful mediation of the Galmudug and congratulated the IGAD Special Envoy to Somalia for this efforts and Expresses concerns on the recent clashes between Somaliland and Puntland; and, calls upon the two parties to cease hostilities and revert to the status quo” the communique stated.
Somaliland and Puntland had recently deployed more troops near the strategic town.
Last Monday the self declared republic’s Vice President Abdirahaman Abdillah Ismail together with top military officials visited troops based in Tukaraq which Somaliland captured last month.
