Six Somali family members died in a suspected gas heater accident at their home in Cairo, relatives confirmed Sunday.
The victims, who had recently arrived in Egypt, were discovered after family members lost contact with them late Friday afternoon, according to Hassan Hirsi Hussein, a relative.
“We contacted the Somali Embassy in Cairo after failing to reach them and eventually had the door to their house broken open,” Hussein told Somali Universal TV.
Some family members had recently returned from Turkey, while others had travelled from Somalia. Hussein noted that Egyptian health officials are currently examining their bodies, which are stored in a freezer.
The Consul of the Somali Embassy in Egypt, Ismail Abdi Hussein, stated that Egyptian security forces are investigating the incident. He added that the family had only been in Cairo for five days, having travelled for medical purposes.
