Mogadishu mayor meets EU operations commander to strengthen support for security and development programs
The Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein (Muungaab), on Monday received a high-level delegation led by the European Union Operations Commander in Somalia, Gen. Marco Manzone, at the Mogadishu City Hall.
The meeting marked another step in deepening collaboration between the Banadir administration and the EU on programs supporting security, reconstruction, and public services in the Somali capital.
During the meeting, both sides discussed in detail the various European Union-supported initiatives that are currently being implemented in Banadir.
Key topics included enhancing coordination of these projects with the city’s broader development plans and ensuring that EU-funded programs align with local priorities, particularly in security, rebuilding infrastructure, and improving essential social services.
Mayor Dr. Muungaab expressed his appreciation for the EU’s ongoing support to Banadir, emphasizing the importance of scaling up this assistance to strengthen key national programs. He highlighted the upcoming local council elections as a critical area where enhanced support would contribute to smooth and transparent electoral processes.
“We are grateful for the continuous support from the European Union, which has been vital in helping Banadir achieve progress in security, reconstruction, and service delivery. Strengthening this partnership will ensure that our programs have tangible benefits for the people of Mogadishu,” Mayor Muungaab said.
Gen. Marco Manzone, leading the EU delegation, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to working closely with both the Banadir administration and the Mogadishu City Council.
He stressed that the EU remains dedicated to supporting state-building, security enhancement, and reconstruction efforts, and is ready to expand technical assistance and development cooperation in the city.
The discussions also focused on long-term strategies to improve public service delivery and the capacity of local institutions, ensuring that development initiatives have a sustainable impact on the residents of Mogadishu.
Both sides agreed to strengthen the coordination of EU-funded projects with local plans, avoiding duplication and maximizing results for the people.
The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to enhance cooperation and accelerate ongoing programs aimed at achieving **sustainable security, effective governance, and visible development** in the Somali capital.
Mayor Muungaab and Gen. Manzone emphasized the importance of working together to deliver practical and results-oriented initiatives that directly benefit the residents of Mogadishu.
This engagement underscores Somalia’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships with international stakeholders, ensuring that development, security, and governance initiatives are aligned with local needs and priorities.
The EU has been a key partner in supporting Somalia’s reconstruction and stabilization efforts, particularly in Banadir, which hosts the nation’s capital and is central to national political, economic, and social development.
