Military takes control of Guinea-Bissau after disputed presidential election.
Military officers in Guinea-Bissau have seized power, annulled the recent presidential election, and imposed a curfew, escalating the political crisis in the country.
Guinea-Bissau is facing a political crisis after a group of military officers announced that they have taken full control of the country, just days after a disputed presidential election.
The officers read a statement on national television declaring the annulment of the election results. They also announced the closure of all land, air, and sea borders and imposed a curfew until further notice.
The military seized the headquarters of the electoral commission, the presidential palace, and the Ministry of Interior in the capital, Bissau.
The election was expected to be contested between President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and opposition candidate Fernando Dias, with results scheduled for announcement on Thursday.
President Embalo told France24 that he had been removed from office and is currently at the military headquarters. Reports also indicate that the president has been detained as the situation continues to unfold.
