Puntland vice president chairs cabinet meeting on security drought and local governance reforms
Puntland Vice President and Deputy President of the regional administration, Ilyas Osman Lugatoor, chaired the Cabinet meeting this week, which focused on general security, the ongoing drought situation in Puntland, amendments to the law on regions and districts, local government formation, and other key issues.
During the session, the Cabinet approved by majority vote the proposed amendments to the law governing regions, districts, and the establishment of local governments. These amendments were submitted by the Ministry of Interior, Federalism, and Democratization of Puntland and aim to strengthen local governance structures across the region.
The Vice President emphasized the importance of coordinated government action to address both the humanitarian challenges posed by the drought and the broader goal of improving administrative efficiency and transparency in local governance.
Officials noted that the approved legal amendments will provide clearer guidelines for the establishment and management of regional and district administrations, enabling more effective delivery of public services and better representation of local communities.
The Cabinet concluded the meeting with a commitment to continue monitoring the security situation, address the drought’s impact on vulnerable populations, and implement the new legal framework to support Puntland’s ongoing governance reforms.
