Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, held a meeting with Chinese diplomats stationed in Mogadishu to discuss the security situation in Somalia and review Beijing’s policy regarding the fight against militant groups operating in the country.

During the meeting, the Chinese foreign minister focused on strengthening the protection of Chinese citizens and safeguarding China’s growing economic interests in Somalia. He stressed that the Chinese government is ready to take additional measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel working in areas facing security risks.

Officials from the Chinese embassy in Mogadishu briefed the minister on the security environment in which they operate, highlighting ongoing challenges as well as cooperation with Somali authorities. They also noted that China continues to support the Somali National Army as part of broader bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The discussions come at a time when the government of Somalia has intensified military operations against militant groups including Al-Shabaab and Islamic State in Somalia, while seeking greater international collaboration to stabilize the country.

China has long been one of Somalia’s key partners in trade and infrastructure development, with Chinese companies involved in several construction and development projects across the country. Observers say Beijing is increasingly showing interest in playing a more active role in regional security matters in East Africa in order to protect its expanding investments and maintain stability in areas where Chinese citizens and companies operate.
