Electoral commission releases corrected district list for local council elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission and Boundaries (GMDQS) has officially shared with the Somali public and all political parties the corrected list of districts where the local council elections will be held across the federal member states.

The commission noted that the previous schedule contained a technical error during the preparation of the district list, which mistakenly included Galdogob district in Puntland. The local council elections in Galdogob had already taken place on 25 May 2023.

As a result, the commission clarified that Galdogob is not included in the updated schedule or the district list for the current local council elections.

The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and compliance with the country’s electoral law, and apologized for the technical mistake.

Districts included in the current local council elections span multiple federal member states, including South West State, Hirshabelle, and Galmudug, covering key districts such as Baydhabo, Baraawe, Berdaale, Afgooye, Wanlaweyn, Buur-Hakaba, Diinsoor, Xudur, Jawhar, Beledweyne, Matabaan, Warsheekh, Cadale, Jalalaqsi, Balcad, Mahadaay, Hobyo, Gaalkacyo, Caabudwaaq, Xeraale, Ceeldheer, Balanbale, Bari, Cadaado, Xarardheere, Guriceel, Xudun, Taleex, and Buuhoodle.
