Zohran Mamdani, who won the New York City mayoral election in November 2025, has officially been sworn in as the city’s new mayor, marking the start of his administration amid high public expectations.
In his inaugural address, Mayor Mamdani pledged to restore unity among New Yorkers, emphasizing that the city’s strength lies in its diversity. He said his administration will prioritize revitalizing essential public services that have deteriorated in recent years, including services critical to low-income and marginalized communities.
Mamdani also made remarks that analysts say could draw criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump, declaring his commitment to bridging divisions between Muslim and non-Muslim communities living side by side in the city.
Referring to past federal policies that he said marginalized Muslim communities and fueled social division, the new mayor vowed to promote cooperation, mutual respect, and equal treatment for all residents of New York City, regardless of faith or background.
The speech was met with applause from attendees, many of whom welcomed Mamdani’s message of inclusivity, unity, and renewed focus on public welfare.
