AFRICOM conducts airstrikes on Al-Shabaab fighters in Middle Shabelle.
The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has carried out airstrikes targeting Al-Shabaab fighters in Middle Shabelle region, southern Somalia, according to a statement from AFRICOM.
The strikes took place near Nur Dugle, approximately 215 km northeast of Mogadishu.
“AFRICOM, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali National Army, continues efforts to degrade Al-Shabaab’s capability to threaten the U.S., its forces, and our citizens abroad,” the statement read.
The airstrikes followed attacks by Al-Shabaab militants on government facilities and local allied militia positions, which led to intense clashes between the two sides.
Local residents told media that heavy fighting occurred, with both sides using heavy and light weapons, and explosions and gunfire heard in surrounding areas.
So far, the official casualty figures have not been confirmed, but preliminary reports indicate losses and injuries on both sides.
