Speaker Madoobe returns to Mogadishu after diplomatic gains in East Africa
Somalia’s Parliamentary Speaker Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor has returned to Mogadishu after a regional mission that saw him elected Chairperson of the East African Community Speakers Forum and engage in bilateral talks with Kenyan officials on strengthening parliamentary cooperation.
Somalia’s Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Noor (Madoobe), has arrived back in Mogadishu after a week-long regional mission that included key parliamentary engagements in Uganda and Kenya.
Speaker Madoobe and his delegation were received at Aden Adde International Airport by Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Omar Abshirow and several members of the Federal Parliament, marking the end of a trip that officials described as both strategic and successful.
The Speaker had traveled to Kampala for the Meeting of Speakers of Parliaments of the East African Community, where he represented Somalia for the first time since the country joined the regional bloc. During the conference, he was elected Chairperson of the EAC Speakers Forum for the 2025 to 2026 term, a development widely viewed as a major diplomatic achievement for Somalia.
His election places Somalia at the forefront of parliamentary coordination within the East African Community and offers the country an opportunity to shape legislative cooperation, regional law harmonization, and broader integration efforts at a time when the Horn of Africa is undergoing significant political and economic developments.
After the Kampala summit, Speaker Madoobe continued to Nairobi, where he held a high-level meeting with the Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, Moses Wetangula. Their discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two parliaments, establishing a joint Parliamentary Friendship Committee, and promoting knowledge exchange programs to enhance legislative capacity in both countries.
Officials noted that the talks also covered regional security, trade relations, and the role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing cross-border challenges. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation, emphasizing that strong parliamentary links are essential for stability and development across the region.
The Speaker’s visit to Uganda and Kenya is seen as part of Somalia’s broader effort to expand its influence within the East African Community and strengthen ties with neighboring nations.
Somalia’s Federal Parliament welcomed the outcomes of the mission, describing it as a significant step in elevating the country’s regional standing and opening new opportunities for legislative collaboration.
Speaker Madoobe’s return comes at a time when Somalia is enhancing its diplomatic presence across East Africa, positioning itself as a more active and influential member of the regional bloc.
