Russia unleashed a massive wave of drone strikes against Ukraine’s two largest cities overnight, targeting the capital Kyiv and the northeastern hub of Kharkiv in a sustained aerial assault, Ukrainian officials reported on Saturday.
The attack began late Friday, with successive groups of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) penetrating Ukrainian airspace. In Kyiv, air defense systems engaged across multiple districts as explosions reverberated over the city. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko described the onslaught as a “massive hostile attack” and urged residents to stay in shelters.
The Kyiv Military Administration confirmed that falling debris and direct hits sparked fires in at least two locations. The full scale of the damage was still being assessed early Saturday.
Kharkiv, located just 30 miles from the Russian border, suffered significant impacts. Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that several neighborhoods were struck, damaging residential buildings and key infrastructure. At least 11 people were wounded, and emergency services remained on high alert as the security situation remained volatile.
The large-scale strike marks an escalation in Russia’s ongoing air campaign, which has increasingly relied on drone and missile barrages to target Ukrainian energy, military, and civilian infrastructure. As the war enters its fourth winter, analysts note that Moscow appears to be testing Ukrainian air defense endurance and seeking to degrade morale.
Ukrainian officials reiterated urgent calls for enhanced air defense support from Western allies, warning that Russia’s stockpiles of drones and missiles remain substantial. “The enemy aims to exhaust us, to leave our cities in darkness and fear,” a spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force stated. “We need more systems to protect our skies.”
The overnight attack underscores the continued vulnerability of Ukrainian urban centers despite advancements in defensive capabilities. As cleanup and rescue operations proceed, the focus shifts to how Ukraine and its partners will respond to this latest escalation in aerial warfare.
