National electoral commission launches voter registration in Galkayo
Somalia’s Electoral Commission Chairman Abdikariin Ahmed Hassan launches voter registration in Gaalkacyo, attended by regional officials, parliamentarians, and community representatives
The Chairperson of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (GDMSQ), Abdikariin Ahmed Hassan, has officially launched the voter registration exercise in Galkayo, marking a significant step forward in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen democratic participation.
The ceremony, held earlier today, brought together Members of the Federal Parliament, officials from the Mudug regional administration, security commanders, and representatives from various sectors of the local community.
In his address, Chairperson Abdikarin emphasized that the voter registration process is a critical foundation for enabling citizens to participate in shaping the country’s political future. He noted that the Commission is committed to ensuring that the registration system is transparent, inclusive, and efficiently managed, allowing all eligible citizens an equal opportunity to obtain their voter cards.
He further highlighted that the launch in Galkayo forms part of the Commission’s nationwide rollout, aimed at advancing Somalia towards a more credible and participatory electoral framework.
Members of Parliament who attended the event commended the Commission for its ongoing efforts to modernize and operationalize voter registration systems across the country. They urged the residents of Galkayo and the wider Mudug region to take full advantage of the registration opportunity and secure their voter cards ahead of future electoral processes.
Local leaders also reaffirmed their support for the initiative, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding and promoting the democratic rights of citizens.
The voter registration exercise in Galkayo is expected to continue over the coming days, with mobilization efforts underway to ensure broad community participation.
