Kenya thwarts major terror plot targeting Nairobi during Ramadan

Security agencies in Kenya have announced the disruption of a major terrorist attack plot that was reportedly planned to be carried out in the capital, Nairobi, and linked to Al-Shabaab.

In a statement issued by Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya, officials said a months-long covert operation dismantled the network behind the planned attack. Authorities tracked the group’s movements, communications, and suspected logistical support as part of the intelligence-led operation.

Investigations led to the recovery of a cache of weapons and explosives intended for targets within Nairobi. Seized items reportedly included more than 600 rounds of ammunition, pistols, hand grenades, explosive materials, and narcotics. The equipment is believed to have been prepared for use in the planned attack.

Security officials indicated that the plot was intended to be executed during the holy month of Ramadan. Authorities also revealed that the suspects had allegedly explored the possibility of kidnapping foreigners and hijacking vehicles as part of the broader plan.

The intelligence operation focused on a suspected cell operating within the Dadaab refugee camps, where the weapons and materials were reportedly recovered. Kenyan authorities have since heightened surveillance and security at key installations in Nairobi to ensure continued public safety.

The Kenyan government has not yet disclosed the number of arrests made, but investigations remain ongoing.
