Somalia’s Lower House holds first reading of draft police force law
Somalia’s House of the People held the first reading of the draft Somali Police Force legislation, with the Internal Security Minister briefing MPs on its key provisions. The Speaker instructed the Committee on Internal Affairs and Security to prepare the draft for a second reading and formal debate.
Members of the House of the People of the Federal Republic of Somalia today convened the 20th session of the 7th parliamentary term at the House headquarters. The session was chaired by the Speaker of the House, Sheikh Aden Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), and attended by the Second Deputy Speaker, Abdullahi Omar Abshir.
The main agenda of the meeting was the first reading of the Draft Legislation on the Somali Police Force, submitted by the Ministry of Internal Security. Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), briefed the lawmakers on the key provisions of the draft, highlighting its objectives and importance for strengthening security institutions in the country.
In accordance with parliamentary procedures, the first reading did not open the floor for formal debate. However, several MPs posed questions to the Minister, focusing on the general principles of the draft legislation and its anticipated impact on national security.
At the conclusion of the session, the Speaker instructed the Committee on Internal Affairs and Security to take over the draft legislation, prepare it for the second reading, and facilitate formal debate in the House of the People.
