Banaadir region’s Hamarweyne District Commisioner was on Wednesday arrested after allegedly punching holes on the Somali government’s leadership, Radio Dalsan reports.
An audio purported to be that of the DC Omar Sharif Maye went viral on social media.
In the audio Maye described the current Somali government as the “most corrupt” pinpointing Prime Minister’s Hassan Kheire.
He punched holes on the security agencies fight against Alshabaab claiming some officers were involved in smuggling explosives into the capital Mogadishu.
“You cannot trust the police here. They are asleep on the security checkpoints or just chew khat. They dont care” Maye said in the audio recorded at a Mogadishu event.
He further accused the police of soliciting bribe.
Maye’s arrest has triggered protest on social media by a section of Somalis.
Somali opposition figure Mr. Abdirahman Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame demanded for his immediate release.
“We demand the immediate realese of Omar Maye district commissioner of Hamar Wayne. Mr Maye was arrested, because he spoke against corruption and security failure. This action is another example of FGS’s growing contempt 4 the rule of law under the leadership of President Farmajo” Warsame tweeted in protest.
