The Governor of Banaadir region and Mayor of Mogadishu Abdirahman Omar Osman “Yarisow†has urged aid agencies and the International community to assist the more than two million internally displaced people in Somalia, the Radio Dalsan reports.
Speaking in Mogadishu’s Kahda district which hosts a large number of IDPs on Sunday, Yarisow said that there is need to provide basic needs for the IDPs and help them work for themselves in the future.
“We request from the international organizations to get a solution for the IDPs by getting them housing and enabling them to overcome challenges facing them so that they become working and self-dependent people,†Osman said.
The Governor also called upon the business community to invest in the district to help residents get all the required services while considering their economic benefit.
“We want the People of Kahda to get required services and request the business community to invest in this district so that it becomes self-dependent and compete with other districts in the region,†said the Governor.
Somalia’s long time civil war and recurrent drought has caused thousands to move to the capital Mogadishu as IDps but end up living in destitute lives.
Recent economic boom is Mogadishu however has seen private investors buying land hence displacing an already displaced people.
Last  Friday at least one thousand IDPs were evicted from the Kalkaal camp in Deynile district of Mogadishu coming exactly a month after bulldozers destroyed another IDP camp in the city displacing 850 people.
