Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has submitted a letter of resignation from his role as the Prime Minister and Chairman of ruling party EPRDF.
Desalegn who served as the Prime Minister of the Eastern Africa country since 2012 submitted the resignation letter to his party during an emergency meeting of the ruling Ethiopian People’s Democratic Front.
“Unrest and a political crisis have led to the loss of lives and displacement of many” he said in a televised address.
“I see my resignation as vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy” Desalegn said.
Desalegn resignation follows a two year long protest by the country´s majority Oromo ethnic group and the Amhara.
