UAE Launches Twitter War Against Somalia As Diplomatic Row Deepens

United Arab Emirates bloggers have launched a social media war on Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo as relations between the two Arab League countries deteriorated following the recent signing of the controversial $1bn Berbera Port deal.

The hashtag SomaliaWantFamagoOut started by UAE bloggers had been trending on twitter from Thursday since Somalia sent a protest a letter to the Arab League seeking the intervention of the Berbera tripartite deal that gave stakes to Dubai company DP World, Ethiopia and Somaliland.

About 200 accounts some newly started and others verified have been involved in what is seen a s a well coordinated and sponsored propaganda against the person of Farmaajo and the Somali government.

Somalia bloggers launched a counter-attack hashtag FarmaajoWillReUniteSomalia depicting some of the President’s achievement since taking charge one year ago.

UAE bloggers tweeted numerous videos and photos depicting insecurity, famine and poverty in Somalia associating it to the President.

DP World CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem on Wednesday called on Somalia to keep off the Berbera Port and declared his recognition of Somaliland as an “independent” country.

Relations between Abu Dhabi and Mogadishu has been frosty ever since the change of guard at the Villa Somalia in February 2017
