An International Committee of the Red Cross staff has succumbed to injuries on Thursday from an improvised explosive device which detonated while he was in his private car leaving his offices in the Somali capital Mogadishu.
The aid worker has been identified as Abdulhafid Yusuf Ibrahim.
“We are devastated by the loss of Abdulhafid who was a valued member of our team in Somalia” Simon Brooks ICRC head of delegation for Somalia said.
“By profounding international humanitarian law Abdulhafid was fully committed to the protection of civilians from the devastating impacts of armed conflict and violence” Brooks said.
“It is profound tragedy that he died of the very kind of attacks he was fighting so hard to prevent” he added.
A second ICRC staff suffered minor injuries in the explosion.
Abdulhafid leaves a wife and two daughters aged one and two.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
