Somali National Security Agency (NISA) has shut down leading newspaper in the country.
Xog Ogaal newspaper office was raided and editor Abdi Aden Guuleed arrested on Saturday evening.
According to the manager of the publication Mohamed Mohamud Aden members from Somalia National Inelegancy Agency stormed their office and confiscated all equipment of the publication before arresting the editor in chief of the Newspaper.
“We still don’t know the main reason behind the arrest and the whereas about of the editor,†said the manager.
The newspaper is one of the few publications that withstand the civil strife in the country and recently celebrated its 26th anniversary.
National Union for Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and Somali Independent Media Houses Association (SIMHA) have both condemned the attack and called for respect to press freedom by security agencies.
“We demand the unconditional release of the Journalist.†Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, NUSOJ Secretary General said,
The chairman of Somali Independent Media Houses Association Hassan Gesey has also called for the return of confiscated publication equipment immediately.
