The Turkish-flagged exploration vessel, Çağrı Bey, has officially been seen off from Turkey as it heads to Somalia to begin an offshore oil drilling and exploration mission along the country’s coastline.
The deployment marks a significant step in the implementation of bilateral economic and defense cooperation agreements between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Republic of Turkey. The agreements focus on the development of natural resources and the strengthening of strategic ties between the two nations.
The send-off ceremony was attended by Somalia’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, the Director of the Somali Petroleum Authority, the Somali Ambassador to Turkey, and other senior officials.
On the Turkish side, the ceremony was led by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, alongside high-ranking government officials, underscoring Ankara’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Mogadishu in the energy sector.
Officials from both countries emphasized that the offshore oil exploration initiative is expected to play a vital role in boosting Somalia’s economy, attracting foreign investment, and enhancing long-term energy security. They described the mission as a key pillar in strengthening strategic and economic partnership between Somalia and Turkey.
The Çağrı Bey vessel is expected to arrive off the Somali coast in the coming days, where it will commence seismic surveys and exploratory drilling operations aimed at assessing the country’s offshore hydrocarbon potential.
The move signals growing momentum in Somalia’s efforts to unlock its natural resources and accelerate economic transformation through international partnerships.
