Somalia and Saudi Arabia are ramping up their partnership in direct response to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. High-level talks in Riyadh this week signal deeper cooperation on diplomacy, security, and economics, bolstering Somalia’s stance amid regional tensions.
Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali held key meetings with Saudi officials following Israel’s December announcement. Riyadh reaffirmed support for Somalia’s sovereignty, rejecting the move alongside the Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation. These talks prepare for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to seal deals and expand ties.
This context sheds light on the heightened sensitivities: Somaliland declared independence in 1991 but lacks UN or major global recognition. Mogadishu condemned Israel’s step as an attack on unity, warning of instability in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea corridors. Public protests across Somalia have rallied behind the government.
Further emphasizing regional alignments, Saudi Arabia’s position contrasts with the UAE’s frictions over Yemen and Red Sea priorities. This shift strengthens Somalia’s position in UN forums and Arab/Islamic groups, reflecting a smart foreign policy pivot toward reliable partners.
The move underscores Riyadh’s growing role in East African affairs as Somalia defends its borders diplomatically.
