Approximately 500 United States troops remain deployed inside Somalia, where they are directly involved in operations against Al-Shabaab and ISIS, despite limited public disclosure regarding the details of these missions.

US forces operate alongside the Somali Federal Government’s security forces, conducting special operations, providing military advice, and carrying out airstrikes. However, the United States rarely releases comprehensive information about casualties, targets, or the overall impact of its operations, raising questions about transparency surrounding military activities in Somalia.

According to a report by Fox News, Somalia is considered one of the United States’ quietest battlefields, with information about airstrikes and counterterrorism missions against Al-Shabaab and ISIS often released after the fact or not disclosed at all.

The US military presence in Somalia dates back to the 1990s but intensified after 2017, when Washington increased airstrikes and deployed special forces to support counterterrorism efforts. Although most US troops were withdrawn in 2020, hundreds were redeployed in 2022.

In early 2025, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that Africa, particularly Somalia, remains a critical theater in the fight against terrorism, while noting that the United States is reviewing the scope of its military presence on the continent.

As the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS continues, the lack of detailed official data on casualties and operational outcomes has fueled ongoing debates over transparency and accountability in US military operations in Somalia.
