The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council held a special session focused on Somalia’s political developments and an assessment of the African Union Mission in Support of Somalia (AUSSOM) operations.
The meeting included an in-depth discussion on Somalia’s security and political situation, and highlighted the financial challenges facing AUSSOM, emphasizing the need for urgent and sustainable solutions to ensure the continuity of operations and support for Somalia’s security institutions.
Algeria’s Ambassador to the African Union, Mohamed Khalid, reaffirmed his country’s ongoing support for Somalia’s stability, stressing Algeria’s commitment to peacebuilding and counter-terrorism efforts in collaboration with regional and international partners. He also highlighted the importance of agreed-upon solutions to address the mission’s economic challenges, enabling the Somali government to gradually take full responsibility for national security.
The AU Executive Committee presented recommendations and options regarding the future of AUSSOM, aimed at strengthening peace, stability, and Somalia’s government institutions. These proposals will first be reviewed by troop-contributing countries and the AU Military Staff Committee before a final decision is made.
The Peace and Security Council is expected to issue an official communiqué outlining the outcomes of the meeting and the strategic direction for AUSSOM moving forward.
