The European Union (EU) is expected to formally announce financial support for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in early 2026, following a two-year hiatus of direct funding, according to UN and AU-linked diplomatic sources.
An EU spokesperson confirmed to the media that Brussels remains committed to supporting the Somalia mission, but noted that details of the funding package,including the amount, duration, and disbursement mechanism—will only be released after agreement among the 27 EU member states.
United Nations Security Council documents indicate that the EU’s forthcoming support will mark a significant return to its role as the mission’s largest contributor. AUSSOM has faced considerable financial pressure after the EU did not provide direct funding in 2025, while the United States previously opposed implementing the UN-mandated assessed contributions framework, as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2719.
The 2023 resolution aimed to cover 75% of AUSSOM’s five-year budget, estimated at $832.5 million, to establish a reliable and sustainable funding mechanism for the AU mission in Somalia. The EU’s anticipated funding is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the mission’s operational continuity and stability.
