Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after being accused of attempting to circumvent the restrictions imposed on his home detention by trying to remove the monitoring device that tracks his movements.
The 70-year-old Bolsonaro faces charges of attempting a military coup and inciting the public against the current government. He was serving a home detention sentence as part of a 27-year prison term, which was imposed prior to his attempt to tamper with the monitoring device.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that Bolsonaro’s detention followed clear evidence of his attempt to violate the conditions of his confinement.
Bolsonaro has denied the allegations, claiming that the detention is a pretext to imprison him and remove him from his home, and he argued that the punishment imposed is unjust.
