The African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the Federal Government of Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation on security and peacebuilding efforts across the country.
The Federal Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), on Wednesday met with Ambassador El-Hadji Ibrahima Diene, the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Head of AUSSOM, to discuss the ongoing joint security initiatives and the progress of the security transition process.
The meeting, held in Mogadishu, focused on enhancing coordination between AUSSOM and Somali security institutions, particularly in supporting operations against Al-Shabaab and ensuring a smooth transfer of security responsibilities to Somali national forces.
In attendance were Somali Police Commissioner Brig. Gen. Asad Abdullahi Osman and *AUSSOM Police Commissioner Hillary Sao Kanu, who discussed police development, joint training programs, and strategies to strengthen law enforcement cooperation.
Minister Fartaag praised AUSSOM for its continued support to Somalia’s security sector and reiterated the government’s commitment to working closely with the African Union and international partners to consolidate peace and stability.
Ambassador Diene reaffirmed AUSSOM’s readiness to stand with the Somali people and government during this critical transition phase, emphasizing that sustainable peace in Somalia depends on strong national institutions and effective regional collaboration.
The meeting comes as Somalia and AUSSOM continue joint security operations in various regions, targeting Al-Shabaab hideouts and expanding government control over newly liberated areas.
