Kenyan security forces have intensified operations in several areas along the Kenya-Somalia border in a bid to disrupt movements and planned attacks by the Al-Shabaab militant group.
According to local sources, the joint operations, led by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and supported by the elite General Service Unit (GSU), have been underway over the past 24 hours in remote settlements near the border. The goal, officials say, is to prevent infiltration by militants suspected of crossing from Somalia into northeastern Kenya.
Residents in the affected areas told reporters that soldiers have been conducting door-to-door searches and questioning locals about the presence of unfamiliar individuals suspected of belonging to the group. Security officials have also increased patrols and surveillance in known transit routes used by militants.
A senior security source revealed that Al-Shabaab attacks tend to increase during the final months of the year, particularly targeting security posts, schools, and communication infrastructure in Wajir, Mandera, and Garissa counties.
The ongoing operation aims to preempt such attacks and restore confidence among border communities.
Kenya’s security agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining stability in the region, emphasizing that the crackdown will continue until all militant threats are neutralized.
The operation follows a series of deadly assaults by Al-Shabaab in northeastern Kenya in recent months, prompting authorities to heighten vigilance and tighten border security in coordination with regional partners, including Somalia’s security forces.
