Officials from Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education joined education leaders from across Africa in Rwanda this week for the Gender and Inclusive Education Exchange, an initiative aimed at strengthening equitable access to learning.
The Somali delegation focused on understanding how Rwanda has successfully built a strong foundation for gender equity in education, particularly in keeping girls from rural and marginalized communities in school.
The visit also allowed Somali officials to explore practical models that could be adapted to Somalia’s context, where conflict, poverty, and social norms continue to pose challenges to inclusive learning.
During the exchange, participants visited schools, teacher training centres, and community-led education programs. Rwanda’s holistic approach, combining policy reforms, community engagement, and investment in girls’ education , was showcased as a leading example of progress on the continent.
For Somalia, the visit comes at a crucial time as the government works to expand access to education, with a focus on girls, internally displaced children, and learners with disabilities. The Ministry’s participation highlights a renewed commitment to closing the gender gap in classrooms and building a more inclusive education system for all Somali learners.
Education experts believe that lessons from Rwanda could help Somalia accelerate reforms already in motion , including gender-sensitive teacher training, curriculum updates that promote equality, and initiatives to make schools safer and more welcoming for girls.
As the delegation concluded its visit, Somali officials emphasized that achieving inclusive education will require more than policies, it demands the sustained involvement of communities, teachers, and parents.
The Rwanda exchange offered not only valuable insights but also a practical roadmap for Somalia to turn ambition into action, ensuring that every child, regardless of gender or background, has the opportunity to learn and succeed.
