Minnesota — Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, held a meeting with members of the Somali diaspora community in Minnesota as part of his ongoing visit to the United States.
The meeting brought together Somali Americans from across Minnesota, home to the largest Somali diaspora community in the U.S., alongside community leaders and business figures.
Deputy Prime Minister Jama briefed the diaspora on the progress made by the Federal Government of Somalia in the areas of security, economic reform, and political stability. He highlighted the government’s “DanQaran” program, which prioritizes reconstruction and the delivery of essential public services.
The event took place on October 4 in Minnesota, a state that has become a hub for Somali cultural, political, and business engagement in the U.S.
The Deputy Prime Minister praised the vital role of the Somali diaspora in supporting Somalia’s recovery through remittances, humanitarian support, and political advocacy. He urged community members to increase their involvement by investing in Somalia’s economy and contributing to long-term development projects.
“The Somali diaspora has always been a lifeline for our people, especially in times of crisis. Your continued support and investment are crucial to building a stable and prosperous Somalia,” Jama told the gathering.
The meeting was organized as part of Jama’s official U.S. tour, which includes engagement with Somali communities, government officials, and development partners. The Minnesota stop was specifically aimed at strengthening ties between Somalia’s leadership and the diaspora base that has historically influenced policy, investment, and advocacy for Somalia.
Minnesota is home to over 80,000 Somali Americans — the largest concentration of Somalis outside East Africa. The community has become politically active, producing state lawmakers, business leaders, and advocates who continue to play a significant role in U.S.–Somalia relations. The Somali government has increasingly sought to formalize its engagement with diaspora communities, recognizing their economic power and influence.
The Deputy Prime Minister’s outreach in Minnesota underscores the government’s recognition of the Somali diaspora as a cornerstone of national rebuilding efforts. By fostering closer ties with diaspora communities, Somalia hopes to convert external support into sustainable development and strengthen its global partnerships.
