Mogadishu, – Opposition lawmakers from Somalia’s National Salvation Council on Saturday accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Parliamentary Speaker Sheikh Adan Madoobe of “hijacking” the federal legislature, claiming the ongoing seventh parliamentary session lacks constitutional legitimacy.
In a strongly worded statement, the MPs alleged that the president and speaker had failed to uphold the constitution and laws of the country, fueling political division, corruption, and what they described as “the erosion of democratic governance.”
The opposition bloc urged Somalis, political stakeholders, and the international community not to recognize any outcomes from the seventh session. They also called for external pressure on Somalia’s leadership to safeguard the constitution and ensure adherence to democratic norms.
“The collapse of this session is evidence that Parliament no longer serves the interests of the Somali people,” the statement read, adding that urgent steps are needed to “rescue the rule of law and democracy.”
Somalia’s federal parliament has been at the heart of repeated political crises, often over power struggles between the presidency, the legislature, and federal member states. The latest confrontation comes as Mogadishu pushes ahead with electoral reforms and constitutional review — moves that have sharply divided political actors.
