Mogadishu, 18 September 2025 — The National Communications Authority (NCA) of Somalia conducted a national consultation on the implementation of the One Network Area (ONA), a regional initiative aimed at reducing cross-border mobile costs and advancing digital integration in East Africa.

The consultation brought together licensed telecom operators to review Somalia’s roadmap for joining the ONA and to provide feedback on the technical and regulatory preparations.

In his remarks, the Director General of NCA, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, stated that “Somalia’s adoption of the One Network Area is about lowering roaming costs, enabling seamless regional connectivity, supporting our digital transformation, and strengthening economic integration within the East African Community.

” During the meeting, NCA presented the National Roadmap for Somalia’s Adoption of ONA, which sets out a phased implementation and provides a clear path for aligning national laws and tariffs with regional standards, preparing regulations, and ensuring inclusive integration.

The consultation offered a platform for dialogue between the regulator and operators, reinforcing shared commitment to affordable and transparent cross-border communication.

Somalia is scheduled to complete ONA adoption as soon as possible, enabling consumers to access more affordable roaming services and strengthening digital and economic cooperation across the wider region.
