Mogadishu, – The Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur (Madobe), participated in a ceremony in Mogadishu marking the 80th anniversary of China’s victory over Japan in World War II.
The commemoration, organized by the Chinese Embassy in Somalia, honored China’s historic triumph against Japanese forces during the Second World War—a milestone Beijing credits as a foundation for its independence and modern development.
In his keynote speech, Speaker Madobe congratulated the government and people of China, describing the victory as “a defining moment that paved the way for China’s freedom and progress.”
The Speaker praised China’s longstanding partnership with Somalia, noting decades of support in key sectors including:
- Infrastructure reconstruction
- Healthcare
- Education
Madobe emphasized that the bilateral relationship is “deep-rooted, based on cooperation, mutual respect, and shared interests.”
“China has always been a true and historic friend, standing by the Somali people in both difficult and prosperous times,” he said, reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to strengthening ties with Beijing for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Somalia–China relations date back to the early 1960s, with Beijing recognized as one of Mogadishu’s most reliable partners in development assistance. The commemoration not only underscored China’s historic narrative but also reaffirmed its active diplomatic presence in Somalia at a time when Mogadishu seeks reliable allies for reconstruction and international support.
The event was attended by:
- Somali cabinet ministers and MPs from both houses of parliament,
- The Chief of the Somali National Army,
- China’s Ambassador to Somalia,
- Representatives from the United Nations mission in Somalia,
- Envoys from several foreign missions,
- Distinguished Somali and international guests.
By joining China’s WWII commemoration, Speaker Adan Madobe underscored Somalia’s intent to deepen historical friendships while leveraging China’s development experience. He expressed optimism that Somalia would benefit from Beijing’s expertise as it seeks long-term stability and sustainable growth.
