Algiers – Somalia and Algeria have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen economic and trade ties, following high-level talks between officials from both countries on the sidelines of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) taking place in Algiers from September 4–10.
Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mahmoud Ahmed Adan Geesood, held a meeting with Algeria’s Minister of Domestic Trade and National Market Oversight, Tayeb Zitouni. The discussions centered on strengthening bilateral relations and opening new opportunities for economic cooperation.
The talks brought together senior economic policymakers from Somalia and Algeria, representing two governments seeking to expand trade networks within the African continent.
The meeting took place in Algiers, Algeria, during the African Intra-Trade Fair 2025, a regional platform aimed at boosting intra-African commerce and fostering continental integration.
Both countries see untapped potential in closer economic cooperation. For Somalia, engaging with Algeria—a North African powerhouse with strong energy, trade, and industrial sectors—offers new avenues for investment and market access. For Algeria, partnering with Somalia presents opportunities to diversify trade links with the Horn of Africa, a region of growing strategic importance.
The ministers emphasized:
- Sharing expertise in trade and industry.
- Increasing commercial exchange between Somali and Algerian businesses.
- Leveraging African trade platforms like the IATF to promote joint ventures and partnerships.
The talks between Somalia and Algeria mark a step toward building a more dynamic economic partnership that aligns with the broader goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). For both nations, the focus now turns to turning political goodwill into tangible trade and investment projects that benefit their citizens.
