Addis Ababa, – Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Bashiir Mohamed Jama, delivered a speech at the Second Africa–CARICOM Summit in Addis Ababa, speaking on behalf of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
The summit, which brings together leaders from African Union member states and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), focused on strengthening cooperation, advancing international justice, and forging collective solutions to common global challenges.
Minister Jama represented Somalia’s head of state at the gathering, which was attended by African presidents, Caribbean prime ministers, and senior international officials. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to build a united voice for the Global South in international diplomacy.
In his address, Minister Jama:
- Thanked Ethiopia and summit hosts for organizing the high-level dialogue.
- Praised African and Caribbean leaders for their efforts to ensure the two regions speak with a unified voice on global issues.
- Highlighted the historic, cultural, and social bonds linking Africa and the Caribbean, noting that the Caribbean was recognized as the “Sixth Region of the African Union.”
- Reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to contribute to joint initiatives on security, justice, climate change adaptation, reform of international financial institutions, and stronger economic, cultural, and political ties between Africa and CARICOM.
The Africa–CARICOM partnership is increasingly seen as a powerful platform for amplifying the perspectives of developing nations on pressing global concerns such as:
- Climate crisis and environmental justice
- Global financial reforms and fairer trade systems
- Collective security challenges
- Representation in multilateral forums
For Somalia, participation signals a growing role in South-South cooperation and international diplomacy beyond the Horn of Africa.
The Second Africa–CARICOM Summit is taking place in Addis Ababa from September 7, 2025, building on the first summit held in 2021.
Somalia’s intervention at the Africa–CARICOM Summit underscores Mogadishu’s intention to engage in global partnerships that extend beyond immediate regional politics. By aligning with Africa and the Caribbean’s shared vision, Somalia aims to position itself as an active player in shaping a fairer, more inclusive international order.
