Mogadishu, Somalia – The Somali Immigration and Citizenship Agency has officially launched the country’s new E-VISA/ETAS system, which will come into effect on September 1, 2025. The move marks a historic milestone as Somalia joins the growing list of nations adopting modern electronic visa systems to streamline travel, enhance security, and improve government revenue collection.
According to the agency, travelers can now apply for Somali visas electronically via the official portal www.evisa.gov.so, eliminating the need for in-person applications at embassies or airports.
Director of Foreigners and Immigration, Isaaq Hassan Taakow, explained that the digital visa platform had been in preparation for a long time. He said the system would simplify the visa process, allowing foreigners to apply from anywhere in the world and receive approvals within a short timeframe. Specially trained staff will oversee the issuance process to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.
Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Agency, Mustafa Sheikh Ali Dhuxulow, described the launch as a “historic step” for Somalia, showcasing the country’s determination to modernize and align with global standards. He emphasized that the E-VISA system will play a critical role in improving border security, safeguarding personal data, boosting economic growth, and easing travel services.
The system will exempt certain categories of travelers from eTAS requirements, including holders of multiple-entry visas, valid residence permits, diplomatic passports, UNLP (United Nations Laissez-Passer) documents, and citizens of countries with free-movement agreements with Somalia.
Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, announced that starting September 1, all foreigners entering Somalia will be required to use the E-VISA platform. He stressed that the system is crucial for monitoring entry, strengthening national security, and ensuring compliance with immigration laws. Importantly, visa fees will be deposited directly into the Ministry of Finance accounts, a move aimed at boosting transparency and accountability in government revenue collection.
The introduction of Somalia’s E-VISA comes at a time when the country is seeking to modernize state institutions, attract foreign investment, and improve its international image after decades of instability. Somalia’s geostrategic location along vital maritime trade routes gives added importance to secure and efficient travel procedures.
