Mogadishu, Somalia – The Director of Sudan’s National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS), General Ahmed Ibrahim Ali Mufaddal, paid an official visit to Mogadishu on Monday for high-level talks with Somalia’s leadership on regional security and intelligence cooperation.
General Mufaddal arrived aboard a Sudanese government Dassault Falcon 900 jet (registration ST-PSA) from Port Sudan. He was received by senior Somali officials before holding a closed-door meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Mahad Mohamed Salad.
According to officials, the talks centered on strengthening intelligence sharing, counterterrorism, and regional stability. General Mufaddal also conveyed a personal message from Sudanese President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to his Somali counterpart.
Although details of the discussions were not made public, analysts say the meetings likely addressed Sudan’s growing reliance on Bosaso Airport in Puntland for logistical operations amid the ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The airport has become a strategic hub in Sudan’s power struggle between the military government in Khartoum and rival paramilitary factions.
The visit underscores the Horn of Africa’s fragile security environment, with both Somalia and Sudan confronting internal insurgencies, militant groups, and transnational criminal networks. For Somalia, closer cooperation with Sudan represents part of a broader push to strengthen regional counterterrorism partnerships and improve border security coordination.
General Mufaddal departed Mogadishu later the same day, returning to Sudan aboard the same aircraft.
