Somalia has been appointed the Rapporteur of the East African Community (EAC) for 2025 during the 24th Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania. The decision marks a milestone for the Horn of Africa nation, the newest member of the EAC, as it seeks to bolster collaboration within the regional bloc and advance shared goals of peace and prosperity.

Addressing the summit, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasised the importance of Somalia’s membership in the EAC, calling it a fulfilment of the nation’s aspiration to join a strong economic and political bloc with its East African neighbours. He reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to the EAC Vision 2050 and pledged active participation in initiatives spanning development, culture, trade, and social integration.

President Mohamud highlighted Somalia’s vibrant, entrepreneurial population, eager to invest in regional opportunities. He also underscored the country’s vast investment potential in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and fisheries, with a strategic advantage provided by its 3,000-kilometre coastline.

The President’s address emphasised the country’s strategic vision and commitment to fostering partnerships that will drive mutual growth within the EAC. His remarks signalled Somalia’s readiness to actively contribute to the bloc’s long-term goals of economic cooperation and regional unity.
